If you’ve lived in the Bay Area for any number of years, you will have noticed that the “vibe” in the East Bay is different from that of San Francisco or the South Bay. Steve Rivera noticed that too when he moved here from Chicago in 1979. With a publishing background in Illinois, he started Diablo Magazine, a trend-setting, innovative, lifestyle publication that “informs, educates and entertains” the residents of the 680-corridor about everything from dining to real estate, personalities to travel, and fashion to fun.
Approximately 30,000 copies are printed eight times a year. The magazine also has a robust digital presence, an established and influential editorial staff, and its finger on the pulse of what is new and interesting in our communities.
Barney Fonzi, out of UCLA with a degree in economics, started at the magazine in 1985, and became publisher about a decade later. In 2014, founder Rivera sold the business to the employees, enabling staff and contributors to curate such interesting issues as Women in the East Bay (May), Best of the East Bay (July/August) and Community Volunteers (December).
In perusing the back issues, I have discovered local authors (who knew that the author of Project Hail Mary is from Livermore?), events in town (such as speaker’s series and jazz concerts), fun travel destinations (near and far), gardening tips (for our micro-climates), plus an entire geography of all the Asian grocery stores opening up in the Bay Area (I’m hopeless when it comes to a good tempura).
Best of all, the recommendations in Diablo Magazine don’t come from paid advertisers. The staff surveys readers and culls observations and tips from the community itself. You can stay digitally connected to the magazine by becoming part of their “A List” – a periodic summary with exclusive event invitations and offers. As residents of Lafayette, you can request a free 3-year subscription by emailing subscribe@maildiablo.com.
