Cycling runs deep in the Sharp family. Both Matt and his father, Dale, are avid cyclists, adventure travelers, and long-time residents of Lafayette. When Matt was just 28-years old, he inherited the bike shop from his father and has been thriving and riding ever since.
Sharp Bicycle has been in Lafayette for 26 years – before that it was located in Richmond for an additional 10. Matt took over the business just as mountain biking was becoming popular. He and his future wife, Sally, were up in Tahoe hiking when he looked down and noticed a thin track in the dirt. “That’s a bike tread, he said,” as he slid his gaze up the mountain of Heavenly Valley, visions of riding the trails with no cars and the fresh air dancing in his head.
All these years later, Matt and his family of five (three daughters all Division 1 swimmers) have trekked with their bikes through Italy, Spain, France, Vermont, Bryce Canyon and, of course, Briones.
The store, nestled in the Fiesta Square shopping mall is old-school, built in the 40’s with high ceilings and a loft that serves as an office and additional storage. Three rows of bikes line the walls – Trek, Santa Cruz, and Cervelo mountain and road bikes for every age, size and sport.
Matt also sells e-bikes, but these are true e-bikes and not the dangerous motorized scooters that kids are riding around in today that resemble small motorcycles. Their maximum speed is 20 mph or so, but they can easily get you up that hill on Panorama.
There is a full repair, tune-up and service space in the store staffed with three mechanics who can build, assemble, repair and customize all brands of bikes.
Stop in and say hi to Matt, who is always in the store. Even after 43 years in the business, he is still passionate about all things cycling.
